A car that's sat for thirty years has made a decision about how hard it's going to make you work, and it's not going to tell you until you start. The 409-cubic-inch W-series is what made the '65 Impala SS the fastest thing a middle-class kid could buy with a confidence-check from the credit union — 348 horses from the factory with a four-barrel, and these engines had a real appetite for revs. Mine came frozen. Water down the intake somewhere in the Carter administration, and then three decades of it just sitting and corroding the ring packs to the bores.

The listen, in order
Here's the sequence I put on a greaseboard above the bench, and it's the same order every one of my warehouse kids knows about a jammed conveyor shear:

The safety that never leaves the shop
Point ignition on these cars still holds enough juice in the coil to bite you clean through a dry glove, especially on a Tampa afternoon when the humidity's eighty. Same principle as the red band on a live pallet load: the second you assume it's dead is the second it's not. I disconnect the battery before I go near the distributor, and I say it out loud to whoever's handing me tools so nobody reaches in cold.
And an old brake line that held forty years of pressure will crack the minute you ask it to bleed. I crack every flex hose and coupler before I ever pressurize — drain risk, then line risk, then pressure. It's the order of things.
The gas tank is a liar
Nobody drains a tank first and it always costs them. After thirty years the fuel's separated: water and varnish sank to the bottom, and that's the layer the pickup tube wants. I siphon it bone-dry, drop the tank, and let it sit with fresh solvent for a week before I even think about a fuel line. You'd be shocked how many "dead fuel pumps" were just full of that sludge. Same as the drum of mystery solvent upstairs at the warehouse — we label it, date it, and if we can't swear to what's in it, we don't pump it.
Where it stands
As of this entry the crank turns free by hand through two full rotations, no rough spot. The borescope came back mostly rust, which is fine — rust is surface, but pitting is fact, so we'll know more when the heads come off. The number one and number two cylinders are the honest ones; they'll tell us whether we hone or we bore.
The lesson keeps its same shape no matter how many years I do this: you don't trust the paper, you don't trust your memory, you listen all the way down. Then you mark the hazard, and then you turn the key.
